Dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life.
The Judd Leighton Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the vision of its founder, Judd Leighton. A life-long South Bend resident, Leighton was an influential leader who was proud of his community and worked diligently to improve the quality of life for its residents. His generosity has benefited numerous companies, medical facilities and educational institutions around the country. However, he focused most of his philanthropic efforts in and around St. Joseph County. Bearing his name are Leighton Memorial Heart & Vascular Center, Leighton Trauma Center at Memorial Hospital, Leighton Plaza, Leighton Health Plex, Memorial Leighton Senior Center, Memorial Leighton Kids Museum, and Leighton Gallery at Northern Indiana Center for History to name a few.

An independent, private grant-making foundation, the Judd Leighton Foundation focuses on three primary areas – health, education and economic development. Wanting to help entities in these categories thrive, and hoping to generate the greatest impact from the awarded grants, the Foundation often works in developing challenge or matching grants.

The Judd Leighton Foundation only makes grants to tax exempt organizations, and preference is given to proposals that benefit the greatest number of residents in the community. In addition, capital projects and program grants are preferred over operating or endowment fund support. Refer to the guidelines section for complete information.
