Center for the Homeless Community Partners Building Renovation

For over 35 years, the Center for the Homeless (CFH) has been the final safety net for countless local residents who faced homelessness in the South Bend community. While probably best known for offering emergency shelter to those in need, they’ve long offered a wealth of services designed to break the cycle of homelessness, including permanent supportive housing, adult basic education, job training, medical and mental health treatment, addiction counseling and early childhood intervention.

A building audit of the physical structures at the Center, however, revealed that extensive renovations would be required in order to improve, and even continue offering, their programming and services.  A plan was developed, and thanks to a generous grant covering the cost of early renovations, work began about four years ago. More recently, with the completion of a new roof, attention turned to the interior needs of the Community Partners Building, which houses the Early Childhood Intervention and Job, Technology Education Centers.

The CFH submitted a grant request to the Foundation that would allow them to renovate the interior of this important building, laying a solid foundation they believe will carry them forward for another 35 years.  The Foundation, citing the long term educational and economic development benefits to the community elected to fund a grant.
