Statistics going back decades consistently show that educational achievement beyond the high school level is the surest route to a higher standard of living, while student financial constraints represent the biggest hurdle to getting that education. Anecdotally and more recently, the Washington Post reported that nearly 4 million adults without college educations remain unemployed after losing their jobs during the pandemic, versus just 199,000 workers nationally who have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher.
The Evans Scholars Foundation has been awarding full tuition and housing scholarships to high-achieving golf caddies in St. Joseph County and across the nation since 1930. Nationally, 42% of their recipients are first-generation students, 35% are female, 35% are minorities, and all come from low-to-moderate income households. No doubt benefitting from the additional academic and professional resources the program provides, they graduate at a 95% rate with a cumulative 3.4% GPA without the burden of student loans, ready to help their families, invest in their futures, and contribute to their communities. For students of modest means, it’s clear that receiving scholarship assistance can be life-changing.
The Evans Scholars Foundation submitted a grant request to support the tuition, housing, and program administrative expenses of the three current scholars from St. Joseph County. The JLF Board, citing the educational aspect of the request and Judd Leighton’s long association as an Evans Scholar Life Member, approved funding to apply to their support.
