LIGHTS at Fernwood
Fernwood’s mission, in part, “is to enrich people’s lives by awakening and deepening their appreciation of nature and the possibilities of harmony between people, plants, gardens, and wildlife.” Fernwood helped fulfil this mission for many years during the holiday season by welcoming the public into their gardens to enjoy a very popular “Lights Before Christmas” fundraising event. By 2009, however, declining support and the increasing challenge for staff to continue to produce the multi-week event by themselves led to a new master plan focused on year-round development.
A recent renaissance in the popularity of seasonal light events nationally, and the recognition that a new event could increase membership and provide the sustained revenue growth necessary to add needed staff prompted the creation of a new event: “LIGHTS at Fernwood.” Additional up front financial support would be necessary, however, to pay for the materials, designers, and contractors needed to develop this grander event.
Fernwood submitted a grant proposal to the Foundation as part of a broader appeal. The Foundation, recognizing Fernwood’s past success, the opportunities for the new event, and the likely additional economic benefit to other area businesses, approved their request.
