WNIT Roof Replacement

As the local PBS affiliate in our community, WNIT meets critical needs and improves the quality of life in Michiana by airing educational programming in the areas of arts and culture, drama, history, science and nature, and news and public affairs. Fifty percent of homes in St. Joseph County watch WNIT each week, accessing their free programming through four broadcast channels, online, or on the PBS video app.

The work of creating and airing their programs happens at the WNIT Center for Public Media in downtown South Bend.  Cracks in the building’s roof deck had been steadily getting worse over a period of years, resulting in water leaks in office and studio space that put expensive production equipment in danger of water damage. After years of ongoing repairs, an assessment by architects, structural engineers, and other industry experts eventually revealed that permanent repairs/replacement could no longer be delayed.

Though WNIT had accrued reserves to replace the upper section of the roof, the project was more complex than originally expected.  Following the recommendation to seek a long-term fix utilizing a modern roof system, they approached the Foundation with a grant request to assist with the repairs.  The Foundation, dedicated to investing in educational initiatives and familiar with WNIT’s commitment to providing educational programming, approved their request.
