Leighton Gallery and Carriage House Exterior Renovation
The Leighton Gallery at the Oliver Mansion was constructed to provide exhibit space and house the many priceless artifacts generously donated by the Oliver family. Funded by Judd Leighton, who attended the grand opening in person, the gallery opened shortly after the mansion began offering public tours in 1990. It was designed to architecturally complement the adjacent, original Carriage House, which had been remodeled to contain additional exhibit space, a classroom, and administrative offices
Time and the elements have taken their toll on the 30-year-old cedar shake exteriors of both the gallery and the carriage house, requiring urgent renovations. These renovations will include replacement of the gallery’s exterior siding, and the roofs of both buildings.
The NIHS submitted a grant proposal to address these repairs, which would restore the Leighton Gallery to its original finish and ensure the protection of the contents of both buildings. The Foundation approved their proposal, helping to preserve these structures known to be so near and dear to Judd Leighton himself.
