Partnership for Children- St. Joseph County

One of the most important needs of children and families in our community is the ability to access mental health services when needed.  Common barriers to treatment include long wait times, the stigma of seeking treatment, cost, and transportation issues.

Oaklawn’s Partnership for Children- SJC is a behavioral health program founded to help provide that access.  Created as a collaboration of numerous agencies that serve youth in St. Joseph County, it was designed to identify youth with emotional or behavioral health issues earlier, get them help faster, and provide them with consistent care from partner agencies (by referral if necessary), improving outcomes for both children and families.  Oaklawn also provides free patient assessments, ongoing mental health consultation to partner agencies, and quarterly training to youth workers at the partner agencies under the program.   Family Support Team at Memorial Children’s Hospital is a group of professionals and volunteers who provide much-needed emotional, psychological, educational, and play support for patients and their siblings, extended family members, and friends.

Oaklawn submitted a grant application for the PFC- SJC project during the December 2020 application window.  The Foundation, recognizing the value to the community of improving access to mental health services for area youth, joined with other likeminded local organizations in supporting this new initiative.
