CIVIC Orchestra Loft- Phase Two
Since moving into the Wilson Auditorium in 2006, the South Bend CIVIC Theatre has struggled to use live orchestras, battling problems with the balance and leveling between singers and musicians during musical theatre productions. While several “fixes” have been attempted over the years that provided some improvement, the main problem remained- the orchestra needed to be located in close proximity to the stage, where volume could be controlled, and performers would have direct line-of-sight access to the conductor. While an orchestra pit below the stage would be the ideal solution, it’s not an option for the CIVIC as their Warner Studio Theatre occupies that space.
The remedy for this longtime balance/leveling problem required an innovative solution- the construction of a dedicated sound studio in an open loft area above and to the left of the stage. Phase One (structural reinforcement of the loft) was completed in January of 2022, with construction of the studio (Phase Two) scheduled for completion one year later. When complete, the CIVIC believes the community at-large will benefit from this project as higher-quality musicals and theatre productions, and more opportunities for local musicians generate more interest and economic development in the downtown area.

The Civic submitted a grant request to the Foundation to help complete the build out of the sound studio. The Foundation, long a supporter of the arts and economic development initiatives, approved their request.
