South Bend Heritage Foundation: Gemini Apartments Rehabilitation
Over the last several years, the declining condition of the Washington-Colfax Apartments had been a much-discussed topic of conversation at neighborhood meetings, SBH board meetings, and within the general community. Neighbors who have been adversely affected by the lack of investment in this large property have long desired to see its renovation.
In 2018, the South Bend Heritage Foundation acquired the property, renamed “Gemini,” with plans to renovate all 30 units while preserving the historic aspects of the 1920’s Chicago Court-style architecture. The goal? To help provide low-moderate income individuals with the opportunity to have stylish, updated housing close to terrific downtown assets.
The JLF board, recognizing the economic value to South Bend of helping to rescue an historic property and retain young, local, professional talent by providing unique, affordable housing, approved a general grant to aid in the renovation.
