South Bend Medical Foundation Blood Donor Collection Vehicle
Ensuring the availability of an adequate blood supply is essential to the health and safety of a community. In the Michiana area, the South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF) has long played a key role in blood collection, traditionally hosting blood drives in their full-size bloodmobiles at the offices of the largest employers in our community.
Post COVID, however, with many businesses downsizing or allowing employees to work from home, SBMF found themselves scheduling a greater number of their drives at smaller businesses than before. A change in their collection strategy was needed. They determined that adding a smaller collection vehicle that would require fewer SBMF employees to staff would allow them to more cost-effectively host drives at these smaller businesses.
The SBMF submitted a grant request to the Foundation that would cover the expense of a smaller collection vehicle that would include two 6-foot donor beds and a small screening area. The Foundation, recognizing the ongoing health benefits the SBMF provides to our community, agreed to fund a grant.
