The Beacon Resource Center is a shared space community center located on the west side of South Bend. Housed in a renovated bowling alley, it currently provides space for 17 partner organizations who offer a wide range of learning opportunities for residents of all ages.
In early 2022, partner organizations began to notice the smell of gas, and that the HVAC system was no longer consistently heating their spaces. The Center learned that the unit, installed in 2004, would need to be replaced in order to provide adequate heating and cooling for the children, students, and families that use the Beacon on a daily basis.
The Resource Center submitted a grant application to the Foundation sufficient to cover the cost of a new, high-efficiency HVAC system. The Foundation, long a supporter of local educational initiatives, approved their grant to fund a system that would provide year-round comfortable temperatures while reducing the costs of heating and cooling the facility.
