The CASIE Center and Family Justice Center Capacity- Building Project

The CASIE Center and the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County (FJC) are two essential nonprofit agencies serving local families and children who experience abuse and/or domestic violence. The two agencies work closely together on a daily basis and believe that this proposed Capacity-Building Project will assist them both in addressing the critical issues they face in a more efficient and effective way.

The project proposal details two separate components to the request–the funds to hire both a shared Controller and a shared Prevention Coordinator. The results of a financial analysis projected that the increase in fund development and mission advancement by the two directors gained as a result of turning financial, administrative, and programmatic duties over to a shared Controller would more than pay for the salary of that Controller over time. The hiring of the shared Prevention Coordinator would not only expand current prevention services, but would satisfy the state’s unfunded mandate, Erin’s Law, to provide prevention programs to all K-12 students.

The CASIE Center submitted a grant request that would aid in the funding of the two shared positions. The Foundation, a longtime CASIE Center supporter, approved a grant request.

The Judd Leighton Foundation, as a complement to Memorial’s existing Music Therapy and Child Life Service programs, provided the grant to establish and staff an Art Therapy program, to be operated by the team. The program was designed not only to provide distraction and therapeutic intervention for children in the hospital, but to provide a base from which to institute a best practice model to include the Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Child Life Services programs.
