New Facility for The Salvation Army – Niles, MI

The Salvation Army in Niles, Michigan has been serving the needs of their neighbors in Southeast Berrien and Cass Counties for over 134 years. From operating an emergency food pantry and serving hot lunches to anyone in need, to providing assistance with utilities, rent, and shelter, their faith-based mission has long filled several important roles in the community.

They’ve been providing these services out of a 6200 square foot, concrete block building acquired shortly after WWII. Age has left the outer structure of the non-ADA compliant facility literally crumbling, and the interior unhealthy due to mold and dust. When considering that insufficient space exists for a long-needed expansion even if the structural issues were not so dire, it’s clear that the current building is functionally obsolete for their mission. They’re in need of a newer, larger, safer place to continue their good works, and they’ve worked relentlessly to prepare for it.

The Salvation Army approached us with a request for financial support, joining with other supporters to fund the construction of a new, 10,000 square foot facility that would include multi-use, community-minded spaces. As long-time admirers of their successes in improving the quality of life for so many over the years, we approved a grant request for this capital project, and cheered their recent groundbreaking.
