The Judd Leighton Foundation, Inc. has awarded a grant to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County, Inc., in support of their grant application to pay for a new roof at their Programs Center, located at 520 Crescent Avenue in South Bend. The grant was approved by the Foundation’s board at its December meeting.
Established in 1904, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is a nonprofit organization that engages community members to join together to provide for the emergency needs of those experiencing poverty, and to empower those they serve to attain self-sufficiency. The Crescent Avenue Program Center houses all of SVDP’s client programs, and served nearly 30,000 individuals in need in 2018. Shingles falling from the old roof posed both a significant safety hazard for staff, volunteers, and clients, and a potential leak hazard to the building, either of which could have forced its closure.
